From Reverend John Carr

Dear Friends
Thank you for your kindness, prayers and support.  Liz and I have been overwhelmed and humbled by your care, for both of us, during my illness.  I had a very real sense of being held in prayer, often in the most traumatic times of pain or uncertainty and I give thanks for each of you and remember you in my prayers, with thanksgiving.

Yours in Christ
John

Christ taught his disciples to love one another. In his community of love, in praying together, in sharing all things and in caring for the sick, they recalled his words: ‘In so far as you did this to one of these, you did it to me.’ We witness to this teaching and to pray in the name of Jesus the healer that the sick may be restored to health and that all among us may know his saving power.

 Prayer of thanksgiving
Blessed are you, sovereign God, gentle and merciful, creator of heaven and earth. Your word brought light out of darkness. In Jesus Christ you proclaim good news to the poor, liberty to captives, sight to the blind, and freedom for the oppressed. Daily your Spirit renews the face of the earth, bringing life and health, wholeness and peace. In the renewal of our lives you make known your heavenly glory.
Blessed be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

             Blessed be God for ever.

BISHOP’S LETTER FOR PARISH MAGAZINES: JULY 2010

“It’s not on any map:  true places never are”
(from Moby Dick)

Maps are marvellous.  The current exhibition of maps at the British Library in London is attracting large crowds, and Mike Parker’s Map Addict is proving to be a bit of a best-seller.

Why?  What is it about maps which we find so compelling?  Well in part the answer lies in the stories they tell about how people past and present have seen their world.  They highlight the things that mattered most to previous generations, and today they facilitate travel and communications in ever more sophisticated ways.

But they remain artificial.  They try to present in two dimensions what is essentially a three-dimensional world.  Fascinating though they are, they only work when we apply to them our three-dimensional experience of the world around us so as to see in our mind’s eye the hills and valleys on the flat map as they really are.

Adding a further dimension to what we see, hear, feel and touch day by day is what faith in God is all about.  So many people lead two-dimensional lives with little sense of that something more which transfigures reality and transcends what is otherwise ordinary and everyday.

Rudolph Otto, a famous theologian of the last century, used the word “numinous” to describe that idea of the Holy which we discern with the eye of faith.  Living by faith is three-dimensional living.  Why settle for a mere map when you can experience the real thing?  Why settle for life in two dimensions when Jesus offers us life in all its fullness (John 10:10)?

The Pilgrim’s Path

Pilgrimage can seem a funny idea, journeying somewhere ‘just’ for religious reasons, but it has a place in all the major world religions. People go on pilgrimages for many different reasons, sometimes to see the place where something happened, or to get near to something sacred. Some go to answer an inner calling, or from curiosity. But one thing’s certain, going on pilgrimage, as I recently did to the Cathedral of Chartres in France, takes you outside of your familiar routine, allowing space and time to encounter the new. There’s something about the pilgrim’s journey that makes it different; there’s a sense of anticipation, of stepping outside the routine. But also an openness to the spiritual in what happens, to listening to what calls. You don’t have to go far on a pilgrimage, but you do need to go deliberately, and to be open to an encounter that can surprise you.

I arrived in Chartres at Pentecost, and noticed the life of the cathedral with a pilgrim’s eyes. Many of the visitors I saw had walked the 50 miles from Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, as they do over the Pentecost weekend each year. I had seen the procession from the window of the train as I travelled, it made an inspiring sight. The annual pilgrimage of several thousand people is quite an undertaking, groups of young people carry banners with the name of their church and meet together to celebrate the end of their journey in the great cathedral.

We’re coming into the holiday season, when most people take a break from the regular routine to recharge the batteries. But it’s not just our bodies and minds that need a break and a change of pace. Our spirits also need feeding, whether it’s by going somewhere beautiful, appreciating the beauty of the natural world, or just spending time quietly with the people who are really important to us. Perhaps a pilgrim journey to somewhere with a special significance for you could be just what your spirit needs this summer!
Revd Annabel Barber

A great time was had at the recent Summer Fayre at Walesby when £500 was raised for Church funds, looks like we have some contenders for a “Walesby Group Strictly Come Dancing” in the future….now there’s an idea!

Something to Make You Smile....

YOU MAY BE SURPRISED TO HEAR THAT THERE ARE MORE CATHOLIC CHURCHES IN LAS VEGAS THAN CASINOS.

NOT SURPRISINGLY, SOME WORSHIPERS AT SUNDAY SERVICES WILL GIVE CASINO CHIPS RATHER THAN CASH WHEN THE COLLECTION IS TAKEN.

SINCE THEY GET CHIPS FROM MANY DIFFERENT CASINOS, THE CHURCHES HAVE DEVISED A METHOD TO COLLECT THE OFFERINGS…

THE CHURCHES SEND ALL THEIR COLLECTED CHIPS TO A NEARBY FRANCISCAN MONASTERY FOR SORTING AND THEN THE CHIPS ARE TAKEN TO THE CASINOS OF ORIGIN AND CASHED IN.

THIS IS DONE BY THE CHIP MONKS!

Happy Holidays everyone……… See you in September

The Brookenby Bash 2010

Can you help Saint Michael and All Angels Church Brookenby? Due to the success of the Brookenby Bash last year we are running another week of activities from the 16th to the 20th August.  The Bash is a Christian led week of varied fun activities for children and young people with opportunities to share the Christian message through age appropriate activities for the youth of today and with  non Christian adult helpers.
We are looking for adult Christians to prayerfully consider giving up some free time to help at the Bash. There are lots of different ways you can be involved, be it working
with the children as helpers or leaders, helping in the kitchen with  the refreshments, helping to set-up and clear away etc., then please  get in touch with Joy on: 07533370779 full support given, no experience necessary, no upper age limit! (Please note: CRB checks will be carried out)

The Bash is open to all ages of children and young people with morning, lunchtime and afternoon sessions. It also offers extra evening sessions for the older children.  You don't need to be at every session.

The planning committee have already met and are planning to put together a list of potential volunteers to assist with the Bash.
Many thanks and God Bless.

Jar of Grace Appeal, Lent 2010

I recently sent £90 from the Walesby Group to UNICEF for the Lent Jar of Grace appeal. Although this was a lot less than we have raised in previous years I am grateful to those of you who were able to assist.  We have received thanks from UNICEF and information that it will help provide basic survival measures for children in Mozambique such as vaccines and mosquito nets. As a result more children under the age of 5 are likely to stay alive and healthy.
Thank you to those of you who so generously donated to this appeal, it will make a big difference to the lives of many children.
Elaine
