BISHOP’S LETTER FOR PARISH MAGAZINES: MARCH 2010

Remembering Bishop King

Lincoln has more of its Bishops with designated days in the Anglican Calendar than any other except Canterbury.  They are Birinus (in those days Bishop of Dorchester), Hugh, Robert Grosseteste and Edward King.

It has been said that in the old days Communion Vessels were made of wood whilst Bishops were all gold – and now it’s the other way round!  Well, perhaps I had better leave others to make that judgement but we can indeed be proud of the part the See of Lincoln has played in the spiritual life of our nation through its most distinguished Bishops.

That is why the visit of the Archbishop of Canterbury to the Diocese 5 – 8th March to share with us in marking the Centenary of the death of Bishop Edward King is so important.  Archbishop Rowan is a person of profound holiness allied to immense learning and pastoral sensitivity.  He stands with the finest leaders of our Church as an example of Christ-like faithfulness and service – and is therefore qualified more than most to do justice to the memory of Edward King.

During his time with us, he will visit Parishes in the north and south of the Diocese, meet community leaders and educationalists, and he will see at first hand some examples of our outreach to the most vulnerable people in our society.  He will engage with our growing number of people in training for Ordained and Lay Ministry, and he will Preside at Eucharists in the Cathedral and St. James, Grimsby.

Tickets for the Cathedral Eucharist at 3 p.m. on Saturday 6th March have been sent to Clergy, Readers and PCC Secretaries in order to try and secure as wide a representation as possible.

But Archbishop Rowan’s Lecture at 11 a.m. on 6th March in the Cathedral will be open to all – no ticket required and no charge will be made.  The title is Faith, Hope and Charity in Tomorrow’s World and will be of general interest to Church people and non-Church goers alike. Of course, early arrival will secure the better seats, but CCTV and screens should ensure that everyone will be able to see and hear well.

Please contact my office by telephone or e-mail (01522 534701  bishop.lincoln@lincoln.anglican.org ) if you have any queries about these arrangements.

Interim Arrangements in the Walesby Group of Parishes

As you will know our Rector Revd John Carr is currently unwell and we do not expect him to be recommencing his ministry among us until at least February. Therefore by agreement with Bishop David and the Churchwardens of our parishes we have put in place some interim arrangements for pastoral care and service provision.

The first point of contact for queries or pastoral issues should be to Revd Jamie Mackay whose contact details are on the front cover. We are in regular contact so if you need to leave a message one of us will get back to you as soon as we are able to do so.  Linda, Jamie’s wife may also be involved in follow up pastoral visiting (She has a healthcare background)

The revised service provision is detailed at the back of this edition of Wolds Witness and on our web site. Broadly speaking all churches will continue to receive the same number of services but there will be a reduction in Holy Communions offered during January and February.

There will therefore be one service of Communion in the Group each Sunday on a rota basis between the parishes.  We are fortunate in having an active ministry team to serve our Group and services of morning and evening prayer can therefore be shared between a good number of ministers. These interim arrangements will also give us an excellent opportunity to try out alternative styles of worship and we would be happy to discuss any ideas that you may have about this.

Whilst John is away from ministry then we have agreed with Bishop David that the pastoral care and service provision for Nettleton and Thoresway will rest with the Rural Dean, Revd Canon Ian Robinson.
We would like to thank all of you who have sent messages of support and offers of assistance to the ministry team, these are very much appreciated.

Revds Elaine Turner and Jamie Mackay.

I wonder what you might have given up for Lent in preparation for Easter?  Here’s a thought provoking story.

Four Worms and a Lesson

A minister decided that a visual demonstration would add emphasis to his Sunday sermon.

Four worms were placed into four separate jars.
The first worm was put into alcohol.
The second worm was put into a container of cigarette smoke.
The third worm into chocolate syrup and the last worm into good clean soil.

At the conclusion of the sermon, the Minister reported the following results:

The first worm in alcohol - Dead.
The second worm in cigarette smoke - Dead
Third worm in chocolate syrup - Dead
Fourth worm in good clean soil - Alive.

The Minister asked the congregation - What can you learn from this demonstration?
Maxine sitting at the back, quickly raised her hand and said,
"As long as you drink, smoke and eat chocolate, you won't have worms!"

I wonder what our focus is for Lent; is our main consideration what to ‘give up’ for our health or waistline?  Noble ends in themselves.  However, the main purpose of Lent is to sacrificially give time to consider our relationship with God, the Father and to think about and mirror the sacrificial self giving Jesus Christ’s, God’s Son.

During Lent we could find time to read the bible or attend a Lent group, set time aside to pray and focus on the sacrifice that Jesus Christ made for us by dying on the cross.  Lent also provides us with an opportunity to come before God afresh to seek His forgiveness for the things that are wrong in our lives.

Then on Easter Sunday Christians meet together to celebrate the day when Christ was raised from the dead.  By Jesus conquering death, we can rejoice that we too can live in the hope of this same resurrection and that we can be fruitful in sharing this Good News.

Like the worm is alive in the good soil or the seed planted in the good soil we can grow in our relationship with God the Father through His Son.  By allowing ourselves to be alive to His Spirit in our lives we can grow and bear fruit.

Matthew 13: 23 ‘for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and yields.’

On behalf of the Clergy team may I wish you all a reflective Lent & blessed Easter.
Revd. Jamie Mackay

UNICEF JAR OF GRACE APPEAL 2010

Each year, as part of its outreach during Lent, The Walesby Group of Parishes has supported the work of UNICEF helping the poorest children around the world.

This year the UNICEF appeal is specifically aimed at helping children in Mozambique where 75% of the population live below the poverty line, nearly half the population are under 18 and 395 children die each day from preventable and treatable diseases  UNICEF are seeking to provide education, health care and to restore childhood to the children of Mozambique. UNICEF believes that all children have the same rights whatever their circumstances.

This year you are again all invited to join in this very worth while appeal and in each of our churches you will find further information about how to participate including a Poster, an information sheet and the jar of grace leaflets and tear off stickers.
Please could you distribute these among your congregation and any others in your village who may be interested in supporting this appeal?
As usual I will start collecting the jars at Easter and hopefully through our giving we can make a real difference to the lives of a group of children in our world.

Last year I sent, on your behalf, a cheque for £195 to UNICEF, and it would be wonderful if we could raise at least as much again this year.

Many thanks on behalf of the world’s poorest and most vulnerable children

Revd Elaine Turner

Songs of Praise

The ministry team thought that it would be good to hold a Group Songs of Praise at some stage during the summer months at one of our Evensongs. Unfortunately due to Easter arrangements and a Deanery Evensong in April it will not be possible to do this until May or June. However please start to think about this at your PCCs as we would like one hymn chosen from each parish with a short explanation about why this choice has been made. If any parishes would also like to suggest a favourite bible reading or piece of poetry or prose to go with the hymn that would also be good.
More details will be available over the next couple of months…..but start thinking now!

Claxby Hillside Service

This year the hillside service in Claxby will be held on Sunday May 16th at 3.00pm at Griff Wood.  This is a new wood which overlooks the village of Claxby and was the idea of the friends and family of Adam Griffin a young man from the village who sadly died in 2007. Trees were planted in his memory, the number matching his age when he died, and since then these have been augmented by further trees planted in memory of other former residents of Claxby.
The service last year was very well attended and received and we will be following a similar style this year with space for reflection, thanksgiving and remembrance of those whom this wood commemorates and whom we love. We do hope that you will be able to join us; further details will be available nearer the time.

The Brookenby Bash 2010

Can you help Saint Michael and All Angels Church Brookenby? Due to the success of the Brookenby Bash last year we are running another week of activities from the 16th to the 20th August.  The Bash is a Christian led week of varied fun activities for children and young people with opportunities to share the Christian message through age appropriate activities for the youth of today and with  non Christian adult helpers.
We are looking for adult Christians to prayerfully consider giving up some free time to help at the Bash. There are lots of different ways you can be involved, be it working
with the children as helpers or leaders, helping in the kitchen with  the refreshments, helping to set-up and clear away etc., then please  get in touch with Joy on: 07533370779 full support given, no experience necessary, no upper age limit! (Please note: CRB checks will be carried out)

The Bash is open to all ages of children and young people with morning, lunchtime and afternoon sessions. It also offers extra evening sessions for the older children.  You don't need to be at every session.

The planning committee have already met and are planning to put together a list of potential volunteers to assist with the Bash.
Many thanks and God Bless.

Confirmation Classes

There will be a Deanery confirmation at Middle Rasen on 16th May 2010 and therefore we will be holding preparation classes for those who would like to explore their faith further with a view towards confirmation. These will be held on Wednesday evenings for 4 weeks from 24th February to 17th March ( venue and time to be agreed ). If you are interested in considering confirmation and would like to attend these classes please can you speak to Revd Jamie Mackay or Revd Elaine Turner.

Sessions will restart as soon as the weather improves
